Single motherhood is a hotly debated topic in Africa. In most African cultures, the idea of a family is built around the father or, at least, a father figure. This results in the wrong-shaming of women who get in the family way without a claim to a man as the father of the baby. However, thoughts around this topic are changing across the continent as single mothers have started to assert themselves, proving to the society that they can still raise their kids without a man and without shame. "Nwa Bu Ihe Nrite" is Igbo for "a child is a prize".
